The MMA borned in Brazil and started using to match different kinds of Marcial Arts to prove which one would be the best. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Fighters always were the kings of MMA and they dominated the MMA by years. The name "Vale Tudo" borned by the rules, because Vale Tudo means "You can do anything" and how the rules were basic or almost no rules. That way, it could not help any kind of Martial Art. Until the end of 80 decade, the MMA was very popular in Brazil inside MMA and some people sometimes believed that MMA and BJJ were the same kind of Fight.
In the early 90 decade Brazil starts to export MMA Fights and Fighters to Japan, Europe and EUA, with this the Vale Tudo started to use the name Mixed Martial Arts and start to have rules to be on TV. The rules are not standart.
In Japan you can kick the opponent when he is on the floor but you can't use the elbows, in EUA is the opposit. In Brazil, in the most of big tournaments whe use the rule that is more popular around the world on the moment because we export a lot of fighters but some small tournaments are still "No rules bared" and use the name VALE TUDO.
To be a great and complete MMA fighter you have to be complete on the grapple or stricking game.
